Orthodontic Options: Invisible Braces and Invisalign® - Asheville

You don’t need to be a kid to wear braces. Our orthodontist, Jim MacAlpine, D.D.S., M.S. , believes that it’s never too late to improve your smile. In addition to straightening teeth, braces can improve your bite, align your upper and lower jaws, and even increase happiness. We notice that people who have beautiful teeth smile more and have a confident self image. Dr. MacAlpine will work with your family dentist to make sure you receive the comprehensive care that results in a beautiful, healthy smile. With orthodontic options such as clear braces and Invisalign® invisible braces, our patients from Asheville and surrounding areas, including Greenville, Tennessee, will find treatment options to fit any lifestyle.

Traditional Orthodontic Braces

Through steady, gentle pressure, orthodontic braces gradually move teeth into a new position, correcting gaps and overlaps. Traditional braces use brackets that are bonded onto each tooth through which an arch wire is threaded. The arch wire acts as a guide for the new position of the teeth. Elastics may be attached to orthodontic braces to aid in the movement of teeth.

Brackets made of stainless steel are the most common and affordable option for metal orthodontic braces at our Asheville practice. Many adult patients of orthodontics at our practice prefer a less noticeable look. We also offer gold and silver brackets, as well as several options for patients who are concerned about having a “metallic” look, such as ceramic and clear braces.

Clear Braces

Clear orthodontic braces are similar to metal braces in that they use a thin metal wire as a track on which the brackets move as the teeth shift into their proper alignment. However, the brackets in clear braces are made from pure monocrystalline sapphire and are nearly invisible – the only thing others will see is the arch wire. These braces are designed so that they don’t discolor or stain over time. We often recommend clear orthodontic braces for our patients in Asheville and surrounding areas who are concerned about their appearance. For patients who want completely invisible braces, we also offer the Invisalign® system.

Invisalign® Invisible Braces

The revolutionary Invisalign® system is the closest option available for truly invisible braces. Patients at our Asheville practice like Invisalign® because the aligners are comfortable, removable, and virtually invisible – no one will be able to tell you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Through a series of clear removable aligners, Invisalign® can straighten teeth with no risk of cutting your lips or tongue on brackets or wires.

After sending an impression of your mouth to Invisalign®, you will receive a set of custom-made aligners. Patients typically receive 18 to 30 aligners for a full treatment program, and each aligner is worn for about two weeks, discarded, and replaced by the next in the set. Aligners are worn at all times but may be removed when eating, drinking, flossing, and brushing. By applying gentle pressure, the aligners gradually move your teeth into position.

Average treatment time is nine to 15 months with Invisalign® - similar to the time it takes to straighten teeth with traditional braces. To ensure that your teeth are moving as expected with Invisalign®, you will visit our Asheville office for regular appointments during your treatment.

In some cases where extensive correction is needed to close large gaps or straighten tipped teeth, we recommend traditional orthodontic braces instead of Invisalign® invisible braces for our patients in Asheville and surrounding areas, including Greenville, Tennessee. During an initial consultation, Dr. MacAlpine can examine your teeth to determine if you are a good candidate for Invisalign®.

Care Following Orthodontics

Typically, a retainer is worn following any type of orthodontic treatment, including braces and Invisalign®. Retainers are removable appliances that can be made from clear plastic or a combination of plastic and stainless steel and are worn for at least several months after braces have been removed. Dr. MacAlpine recommends all-plastic retainers for their comfort and reduced interference with speaking. The retainer keeps the teeth in their new position and gives the gums and bone time to adjust around the repositioned teeth. It is important to wear your retainer for the required amount of time so that the teeth do not again shift out of place, requiring additional orthodontic treatment.
